Scott Hazard Studio

Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Nestled between Kenan Stadium, existing classroom/research buildings, the Stone Center, academic buildings and the historic Bell Tower, this project provides a 200,000 SF Genome Science Building, 710 space parking deck and additions to an existing chiller plant designed by SOM, and extensive site improvements designed by HoerrSchaudt Landscape Architects to address connectivity to the campus, improve accessibility and create beautiful and functional green spaces. A “Central Park” located on a sloped open space between the Genome Science Building and Kenan Stadium has become a gem of an open space on this part of the UNC Chapel Hill campus. Slopes in the lawn area are terraced by stone seat walls and a pedestrian path doubling as a visiting football team bus and emergency vehicle access corridor winds it way around the space. Below the green is a 500,000 gallon cistern which captures stormwater for irrigation use at the site and nearby landscape areas. A plant palette rich with native plants and site walls made of native stone help integrate the project’s extensive site improvements into the fabric of the surrounding campus.

Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina

This intimate space was envisioned to commemorate the life of former UNC Student Body President Eve Marie Carson, and all students who have passed away while attending UNC Chapel Hill. The elegant and thoughtful garden at the northwest corner of Polk Place includes a Chatham wall bench with bluestone seats and backs, and a memorial wall featuring Georgia Marble, the stone of Eve’s home state, inscribed with text from an excerpt of her writing. Planting was selected to bloom in the fall at the time of Eve’s birthday.

Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The Pit is one of the most significant and heavily used spaces on campus for students, staff, faculty and alumni. Located at the physical, cultural and emotional heart of the historic UNC Chapel Hill campus, the site design focused on the renovation of existing paving as well as improvements to pedestrian movement, accessibility, stormwater and drainage at this important space. Construction was phased over three summers to minimize impacts to students while on campus. New tree pits include pervious pavers and structural soil cells to drastically improve the root zone area for the trees and provide on-site stormwater treatment and storage.

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina

The award winning Talley Student Union has transformed and expanded the Talley Student Center into a vibrant hub for student-life experiences. The site planning and design, carefully coordinated with NCSU Staff and the design team, create a diverse array of highly used and flexible outdoor spaces that are carefully integrated into the topography and pedestrian circulation which dominate the site. Designed by Duda|Paine Architects, the project reinvented and expanded the original 1972 building into a dynamic hub for student-life and the campus community which houses the University Bookstore, Stewart Theater, dining rooms and facilities, gathering spaces, and offices for student organizations and administration. The hardscape design reinforces an indoor/outdoor connection and ties into the overarching concept of the building behaving as a funnel which collects people from multiple directions outside the building and channels them to the Union. The landscape includes several site walls, ramps and stairways which compensate for significant grade changes on the south side of the building and provide a graceful and accessible path of travel for all who enter and leave the building. The landscape design also integrated rain gardens tied to a 50,000 Gallon cistern to address stormwater runoff from the site and meet campus sustainability goals.

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina

Across the street from the Talley Student Union and currently under construction, this facility will provide a centralized recreation/wellness hub for the campus and includes 20,000 SF of much-needed fitness space, studios and multi-purpose spaces. The landscape navigates significant topography at the site, provides essential ADA accessibility updates and ties into the facility’s wellness theme. The building and site design make significant improvements to ADA accessibility for the existing Carmichael Gym and tie pedestrian movement to the Talley Student Union. Site walls and hardscape navigate and contain the topography at the site and create gathering spaces for students and visitors. The plant materials selected for the project actively work to tie into the facility’s wellness theme by maximizing opportunities for seasonal interest, minimizing supplemental water and providing a strong foundation for a rich ecology within an urban campus environment.

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina

This project at Wake Technical Community College’s growing Scott North Wake Campus includes new classrooms , laboratories, office space and outdoor learning areas in a new LEED® Certified building designed by LS3P. The 64,000 SF Health Sciences Building (Building H) includes hardscape and landscape areas, service access, parking, and outdoor learning areas which serve Wake Tech’s Nursing, Microbiology, Biology and STEM programs as well as faculty training.

Preservation of the existing woods at the site was a priority from the beginning - circulation, intimate gathering areas and low impact stormwater features were integrated into and around the wooded piedmont landscape surrounding the facilities. The landscape areas feature native and adapted landscape material to minimize maintenance requirements and further integrate the built spaces into the ‘natural’ landscape. Large boulders sourced from the site were incorporated into a large hardscape area to frame the circulation corridors, provide seating, and tie the hardscape area to the surrounding environment.

This project at Wake Technical Community College’s growing Scott North Wake Campus includes classrooms and lab spaces, faculty offices and a regional energy plant in two new LEED® Certified buildings. Both buildings share a site and site infrastructure. The 28,000 SF Skilled Trades Building (Building J) includes hardscape and landscape areas, streetscape improvements, service access, and outdoor learning areas serve Wake Tech’s Skilled Trades programs including welding, plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems, building automation, and workforce development.

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina

Central Communications Center built to provide space for emergency response and safety needs for the rapidly growing City of Raleigh. Designed by Clark Nexsen and AECOM, the facility serves as a 911 call center, emergency operations center, data center and traffic control center. As a result of these functions, security and safety concerns were paramount, resulting in a site plan which incorporates appropriate building setbacks, security barriers and vehicular barriers to meet the Central Communication Center’s needs. The site design includes secured break areas, parking and access points for employees working in the building as well as public parking, access points and gathering spaces. The public access for the facility passes through a small plaza which includes space for press conferences with news media, small gathering spaces for breaks and informal meetings with family and friends, and stormwater treatment areas incorporated into the landscape to create a calming edge to the urban space. At the heart of the plaza is a sculpture, Equilibrium, and light runnel created and incorporated into the space by Andy Dufford and his team at Chevo Studios as part of the City’s public art program. As the work for those working in the 911 call center is often stressful, this space was carefully and collaboratively crafted to create an informal space and focal point for those in need of a quiet or pleasant moment.

Location: Town of Cary, North Carolina

Cary’s Downtown Park is an active gathering space at the heart of downtown Cary’s revitalization. Adjacent to the Cary Arts Center, the in-progress Wake County Library and a recently improved streetscape for Academy Street, this 1.5 acre urban park is the first phase of and catalyst for a larger 7 acre park. The small space accommodates a diverse array of programmed and spontaneous activities and is anchored by a magnificent fountain framed on two sides by decades old oaks which were preserved as part of the park design. Garden rooms are defined by the site’s topography, low site walls and a rich plant palette in order to create intimate gathering spots, recreational spaces and spaces allocated for rotating public art installations. Adjacent to the hardscape area surrounding the fountain is an outdoor amphitheater which hosts musical performances, outdoor movies and other cultural events.

Location: City of La Mesa, California

A three acre passive park designed to include peaceful sensory gardens and walkways, Briercrest Park was redeveloped to provide a variety of opportunities for families, children, seniors and the physically handicapped to have rich outdoor experiences, including a butterfly garden, a texture garden and a labyrinth set in a grove of trees. A dry stream bed that meanders through the park unifys the setting and references the landscape of the surrounding area. Briercrest Park serves the surrounding neighborhood as well as an adjacent outpatient center, future Challenge Center (senior and physically challenged activity center), hospital and medical research facilities.

Location: San Diego, California (demolished to accommodate facility expansion).

Designed in collaboration with Aesthetics, Inc. of San Diego, the Serenity Garden is a healing and meditation space at the Scripps McDonald Center, a facility dedicated to treating alcohol and drug abuse. The garden features a small pond, three water features, original art work and a rich planting and materials palette. The garden experience incorporates passages from the Alcoholics Anonymous Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, with each step marked by large paving stones with the text of each of the steps carved into the face of the stone. The garden was actively used by the staff and patients of the McDonald Center as a tool in a patient’s recovery.

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina

The Transitions LifeCare campus is home to the long-established and only non-profit hospice program in Wake County, North Carolina. The 9 acre facility serves families in a seven county area with a Hospice Home care center, Administration and Bereavement Counseling Building and a small Chapel.

The landscape design provides a healing and calming environment for patients, staff and visiting families. A series of landscape rooms, water features and event spaces was constructed to provide a variety of uses and flexibility in programming. The two water features are carefully integrated to provide soothing focal points and white noise to help mask sounds on adjacent properties. Several small intimate spaces are provided for therapeutic counseling, individual contemplation and staff gatherings. A network of paths gracefully connects the garden spaces to each other and the adjacent buildings. A larger event space is located adjacent to the Administration Building to host fundraising events and larger gatherings.

Location: City of Raleigh – Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park

Description: Hidden Rock #1 is a site-specific sculpture installation located at the Visitor’s Center in Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park in Raleigh, NC. Hidden Rock #1 is a sculpted steel ‘boulder’ nestled in a planting area to enhance a sense of discovery. Modeled on a large rock found at the Hidden Rocks outcropping in the park, it consists of 7 weathered steel panels which have been laser-cut to form various outlines of the rock. Each panel is printed with a photograph of a view of landscape and sky found in a meadow area at the park. The repeated image of native grass, tree-line, and sky combined with the form of the boulder conjure themes such as human connections to the land and nature, geology, Piedmont prairies, mindfulness, and the near and distant histories of the North Carolina landscape.
